Amilcar Cabral, "Always bear in mind that people are not fighting for ideas, for the things in anyone's head. They are fighting to win material benefits, to live better and in peace, to see their lives go forward, to guarantee the future of their children."
Design by Beth Gutelius - part of the 2008 Reproduce and Revolt! collaboration series

Amilcar Cabral led the movement that liberated Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde from Portuguese colonialism. He was known for his long careful planning and organizing, focus on cultural production as a form of resistance, and commitment to solidarity of struggles. On more than one occasion, Cabral told the Portuguese people that if asked, he would stand in arms with them against Salazar. He was assassinated a few months before Guinea Bissau declared independence in 1973. I made this stencil a few years ago from a photograph of him that I particularly liked. Thanks to Prexy Nesbitt for helping provide the quote.

Beth Gutelius is an artist and activist living in Chicago.
